Die 2013 in Stockholm gegründete Post-Punk-/Indie-Formation A PROJECTION
musste sichnach ihren ersten beiden Veröffentlichungen, „Exit“ (2015) und
„Framework“ (2017), quasi neu erfinden und hat diese Herkulesaufgabe mit
Bravour gemeistert, ohne ihre eindeutigen Inspirationsquellen aus den
späten 70ern und frühen 80ern zu verleugnen.
Zunächst wurde nach dem Ausstieg des Originalsängers Isak Erikson eine
adäquate Neubesetzung am Mic gesucht, die den originellen sowie originalen
Vibe der Band trifft. Rikard Tengvall, vorher als Bassmann der Band aktiv,
füllt diese entstandene Lücke problemlos und knüpft stilistisch
an den Großtaten der beiden Vorgängeralben an.
Die Songwriting-Sessions zum nunmehr dritten Album „Section“ entstanden
in einer Zeit, in der die Band durch weitere Mitgliederwechsel und auch
gesundheitliche Probleme immer wieder vor neue Herausforderungen gestellt
wurde und letztendlich daran wuchs – menschlich wie musikalisch. Die Songs
auf „Section“ strotzen nur so vor Kraft, garniert mit reichlich Punk-Attitüde,
schnell, rau und gewohnt dunkel und emotional.
Gelöst haben sich A Projection hingegen von den übergroßen Schatten ihrer
einstigen Postpunk Vorbilder, mit denen sie anfänglich immer wieder
verglichen wurden. Über drei Alben hat es das Fünfergespann geschafft, sich
ihr eigenes Sound-Universum zu schaffen und eine eigene Identität aufzubauen,
die zwischen den Polen New Wave, Post-Punk, Gothic- und Indie-Rock oszilliert.
Bei den Aufnahmen hat sich das Stockholmer Quintett hingegen auf bewährte
Strukturen verlassen und auch die Songs zu „Section“ im Stockholmer
Redmount Studio aufgenommen, gemixt und gemastert.
Gemeinsam mit dem neuen Labelpartner Metropolis Records (Welt) hat man sich
schnell auf „Substitute“ als herausragende und dennoch richtungsweisende
erste Single verständigt. Dieser Song vereint alle Tugenden, die wir immer
wieder auf dem elf Tracks umfassenden Longplayer wiederfinden: Eine
ohrwurmverdächtige Hookline, ein Gesang, der Tiefe, Emotionalität und echten
80er Spirit transportiert und ein starkes Fundament aus treibenden Drums,
knarzenden Bässen und flirrenden Gitarrensounds, der stark an die Speerspitzen
der Früh-90er-Goth-Rock-Bewegung erinnert.
Mit „Section“ hat die Band allen Krisen zum Trotz ein durchdachtes,
abwechslungsreiches und starkes drittes Album abgeliefert, welches nicht
nur als Vermächtnis ihres bisherigen Schaffenssondern auch als Grundstein
für die Zukunft der sympathischen Schweden funktioniert.

The post-punk / indie band A PROJECTION, founded in 2013 in Stockholm, had to
reinvent themselves after their first two releases,“Exit“ (2015) and
„Framework“ (2017), and mastered this Herculean task without denying their
sources of musical inspiration coming from the late 70s and early 80s.
First, after the departure of the original singer Isak Erikson, the band had
to search for an adequate replacement on the mic who meets the original vibe
of the band. Rikard Tengvall, previously active as the bass player of the
band,fills this gap without any problems and stylistically ties in with the
exploits of the two previous albums. The songwriting sessions for their third
album, „Section“, came at a time when the band was constantly challenged by
several changes of members and also health problems, but in the end the band
grew – both humanly and musically. The songs on „Section“ are bursting with
power, garnished with plenty of punk attitude, fast, rough and accustomed
dark and emotional.
A Projection, on the other hand, has solved the oversized shadows of their
former Postpunk role models, with whom they were initially compared again
and again. Over three albums, the five-person team has managed to create
their own sound universe and build their own identity, which oscillates
between the poles New Wave, Post-Punk, Gothic and Indie Rock. On the other
hand, the Stockholm quintet has relied on proven structures and recorded,
mixed and mastered the songs for „Section“ at Stockholm’s Redmount Studio.
Together with the new label partner Metropolis Records they quickly agreed
on „Substitute“ as an outstanding, yet trend-setting first single.
This song brings together all the virtues that we find again and again on
the eleven-track long player: a catchy hookline, a vocal that transports
depth, emotionality and real ’80s spirit and a strong foundation of drifty
drums, creaky basses and shimmering guitar sounds that are strong reminiscent
of the spearheads of the early ’90s goth rock movement.
With „Section“, the band has delivered a well thought-out, varied and strong
third album despite all the crises of the past. The new release is
combination of the bands legacy of their previous works but also as a
foundation for the future of congenial Swedes from A Projection.
